Tomorrow is Pi Day. Not pie with an “e.” Pi as in (approximately) 3.14159. Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 around the world to bring attention to the number that represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, and it gives us the perfect opportunity to talk about how math helps Draper make our products better and our customers’ lives easier.

  • TecVision Formulations
Math has long had a close connection to physics. In 1921’s Geometry and Experience, Albert Einstein said this about the association between math and physics: “At this point an enigma presents itself which in all ages has agitated inquiring minds. How can it be that mathematics, being after all a product of human thought which is independent of experience, is so admirably appropriate to the objects of reality?”

Math and chemistry are also inextricably linked. Mathematical calculations are required to explore chemistry concepts, and without those calculations, chemistry would be pretty tough.

Math’s connections to chemistry and physics are imperative for our TecVision formulation development. It’s where everything starts—the building block upon which our award-winning 8K-ready, ISF-certified screens are based.

  • Projection Planning
A more obvious usage of math is in our award-winning online Projection Planner. Our developers spent a long time getting the math right.

Formulas had to be developed to take into account the amount of ambient light at the screen and at the viewer, the type of content being displayed, the image format and size, and more. We then had to make sure the math was right so that the calculations provide the correct projection screen recommendation.

  • The Price is Right
This is the most obvious math connection of all. We use math when we calculate pricing! Sure we use databases and formulas, but we also have to manually spot-check using good old fashioned calculators. The slightest mistake in our calculations here can wind up costing us—and our customers—money, so it’s important that we get it right.

.14) The Rest of the Pi
We’ll use “new math” to fit all of the other uses of math at Draper into the last .14. This includes all the other small and similar tasks, such as the formulations and calculations that work behind the scenes on all of the various items in our online pro toolbox.

See for yourself the power of math on the tools and calculators in our award-winning Pro Portal. Click here to go to our portal, and if you haven’t registered yet, it’s easy—you’ll just need some basic information. If you’re a Draper dealer, you’ll need to use your dealer number to register.
