Two Draper employees share an unusual avocation – competitive barbequing.
Debbie Searcy wears two important hats at Draper – Credit Manager and Traffic Manager. She and her husband Doug have been barbequing competitively for three years as the Hoosier Crawdaddies. They participate in 12 – 20 competitions per year in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee. They have won in all four categories – chicken, ribs, pulled pork and brisket, and last year ranked 17th in the country in pulled pork.
Debbie also participates in dessert competitions, including the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue in Lynchburg, Tennessee, where she finished eighth in 2009 and seventh in 2010.
Our Engineering Technician Roger Mogg and his wife Dawn participate in 4 or 5 competitions per year in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky as Smoky River BBQ. They won the Grand Championship at the 2011 Lawrenceburg, Indiana BBQ Cook Off. Roger and Dawn raise a lot of money for the Spiceland Boy Scout troop selling their barbecue at local fairs.
Debbie and Roger are in-laws by the way. Debbie and Dawn are sisters.
With Roger’s encouragement two other Draper employees, Steve Thompson and Larry Thomas, recently formed their own BBQ team, the Smokin’ Cue Balls. They are currently backyard (amateur) BBQers, but have visions of going pro one of these days.
Amazing.
