It’s 5:30 pm on a beautiful, sunny October day, and I’m walking a tree-lined, paved track, gradually shaking off the pressure of a day’s deadlines. A handful of other Draper employees and family members are walking or running laps, using exercise machines, throwing a Nerf football…
There are more people than usual in our wellness park right now because we’re participating in an incentive program called “Decide, Commit, Succeed.” We’ve formed teams of five, and the one team whose members spend the most time in the park and rack up the most steps during October will earn an extra day’s vacation. My team is a collection of “free agents”–two in the marketing department, one in Bills of Material, and two in our California sales office. We decided to call our team “The Mamas and the Papas,” and we are currently in third place. Our captain, Cindy Howard, is sure we can turn up the pace and win. Cindy’s a good leader. So we will all hop to it, do a bit more walking, and see where we are next week.
Don’t tell my teammates, but I really don’t care whether we win that vacation day. I am just happy to have a reason and motivation from my peers to head outside and walk around that track on a perfect fall evening. Thanks, teammates, and thanks, Draper!
Great article Penny, regarding our DCS Challenge! I think we’re having more fun, encouraging each other, than anything else, and if that was all we had to do, we would win this challenge hands-down! I too find myself walking more, and keeping track of my steps everyday with my handy-dandy pedometer, including steps in-and-out of bed, to the kitchen, restroom, etc… they all count!
That’s what it’s all about-getting healthier. Thanks for sharing :)
