Each year, Draper employees team up to participate in the local Relay for Life to raise money for the American Cancer society, and awareness in the fight against cancer. If you aren’t familiar with the Relay concept, here’s a quick rundown from the Relay for Life website: Relay for Life is an “overnight community fundraising walk. Teams of people camp out around a track. Members of each team take turns walking around the track. Food, games and activities provide entertainment and build camaraderie.”
The Draper team always attacks its fundraising goal with gusto, and this year was no different. Taking the theme of “Finish the Fight” to heart, Team Draper captains Barbara Steele, Cindy Witsman, and Sharla Massengale spearheaded fundraising efforts that included bake sales, the compiling and sale of cookbooks featuring recipes submitted by Draper employees, and selling lemonade and glow-in-the-dark jewelry. These efforts paid off as Team Draper achieved Gold Team status for raising more than $5000.
In fact, when the dust settled, Team Draper had raised more than $7,100—the most by any team in the Henry County, Indiana Relay event. For their efforts, team members were awarded the use of a camper for the night of the Relay.
During the Relay event itself—held June 6 and 7—Team Draper had 64 registered walkers, and participated in many challenges, including a frozen t-shirt contest (unfold and don a frozen t-shirt), water chugging, watermelon eating, chocolate pudding eating, doughnut eating, and Relay Idol (singing), to name but a few. Team Draper took first place in the Relay Idol contest, the water chugging contest, and the watermelon eating contest.
Congratulations to Team Draper and all of the employees who supported their fundraising efforts!
Although the numbers are not final, overall the Henry County, Indiana Relay event raised over $45,000. For more information on Relay for Life, go to www.relayforlife.org.
