Design is all around us. It’s everywhere we look, impacting our daily lives in more ways than it’s possible to list.
Learning about and keeping up with the design world’s news and trends can be challenging, simply because there is so much going on. Here are several interior design podcasts that help make it easier:
99% Invisible
Some of the best examples of successful design go unnoticed. 99% Invisible puts a weekly spotlight on the unnoticed architecture and design that shape our world.
If you’re an architect or interior designer, chances are you already know about 99% Invisible. It’s one of the most popular podcasts on iTunes.
99% Invisible was originally created by Roman Mars for public radio station KALW public radio and the American Institute of Architects. It’s part of Radiotopia from PRX.
This is a prime example of the best creative storytelling podcasts, with high production quality and sound design, and provides insight and history of a dizzying array of subjects.
The Chaise Lounge
Creatives like interior designers also need to keep a steady hand on the business side of things. The Chaise Lounge is dedicated exclusively to the business of the interior design community.
In fact, creator and host Nick May pretty much stays away from the design aspect of the industry and focuses on helping interior designers build a better business. He accomplishes this through weekly interviews with designers about the nuts and bolts of starting and growing a business. The show covers everything from marketing to generating sales and managing employees.
Its simple and intimate approach is what helps the Chaise Lounge stand out, and it is regularly recognized as one of the top architectural and interior design podcasts.
Convo By Design
Convo By Design feels like a labor of love for creator/host Josh Cooperman and his dedication shows. Cooperman’s background is in broadcasting, but he refers to himself as a “devotee of design and architecture.” According to the Convo by Design website, design is personal, as is a good conversation. So, this weekly podcast features interviews with architects, artists, decorators, designers, and others whose ideas make a difference in how we live in and navigate the world around us.
In addition to weekly audio podcasts, Convo by Design also produces video clips from the interviews and other content. The video content is hosted on Convo by Design’s YouTube channel.
Monocle on Design
Monocle is a British magazine known for covering global affairs, business, culture, design, and more from a global perspective.
Podcast host Josh Fehnert and his team of contributors take listeners around the world to cover everything about the world of design, from furniture to fashion and craft to architecture. The variety of voices and a production approach that combines creative storytelling with a BBC/NPR-style news approach makes for a compelling listen.
The Observatory
Hosts Michael Bierut and Jessica Helfand a great team as they discuss design and current events with humor and a comfortable chemistry.
The Observatory is a podcast from Design Observer and is sponsored by AIGA, the professional association for design.
Bierut is a partner in Pentagram’s New York office since and is a senior critic in graphic design at the Yale School of Art. Helfand is a founding editor of Design Observer, an award-winning graphic designer, and a member of the Art Director’s Hall of Fame. She teaches at Yale University. She won the AIGA medal in 2013.
Design Observer’s flagship podcast, Design Matters, is hosted by Debbie Millman and is also worth a listen.
