When it comes time to replace an aging, out-of-date AV system, it’s tempting to go with a slight upgrade to the latest version of the display you have. And if you do evolve the system to newer display technologies it’s also tempting to keep the overall look and performance very similar. But don’t limit your vision based on how things look now or have looked in the past. With the advances made in LED technology, the old limits no longer apply.
When upgrading to LED, why design another flat video wall? With the right mounting structure behind the LED panels, the face of your video wall doesn’t have to be flat. The shape of the wall behind your display no longer dictates the shape of it. Curved video walls are more immersive and attract more attention.
Curved walls can be faceted or smooth. A smooth wall is made up of flexible or custom curved LEDs. But we like working with faceted walls. A faceted wall uses flat LED cabinets to create a curve with brackets. The faceted curves require extremely precise structure and installation. However, faceted walls are less expensive, easier to install, and they allow for finer pixel pitches compared to custom-manufactured smooth-curved LED displays.
On a faceted LED array, the sides of the LED panels are not touching each other; however, the extreme precision required of the LED panel placement is even more important and completely dependent upon the structure holding the LED panels in place. This precision is increasingly more important as the faceted angle between the LED panels increases for two reasons:
- LEDs can potentially come into contact during operation due to heat expansion;
- Large gaps between the panels will result in unsightly seams and must be avoided.
The flex, deformation, or inconsistencies of traditionally constructed interior walls can cause issues because of the kind of precision required. This can be avoided with a structurally reinforced and very precise floor mounted solution in place or in front of the existing wall. This “structure behind the structure” allows installers to precisely locate the LED panels next to each other, secure in the knowledge that they will stay in that position for the life of the display.
