When planning a video conferencing space–or even a space where video conferencing will sometimes be used–remember the windows!
Special attention should be given to eliminating as much natural light as possible from entering through windows during a video conference. The sunlight is very different in nature from artificial light in terms of color temperature, and creates sharp contrasts in the room, which in turn may confuse the automatic adjustment mechanisms of most cameras for video conferencing systems. Effort should be put into establishing uniform lighting in the room, and using products, like Draper window shades, to cover the windows will help. Avoiding direct light on people, presentation materials or the camera lens is important. Direct light tend to create harsh contrasts and shadows, especially when that direct light is natural light.
Draper’s FlexShade window shades reflect light and heat from the sun, reducing the amount of energy required to cool the building, and keeping the light in your rooms controlled to your specifications.
It’s also possible to print on Draper FlexShades, or to manufacture shades with our Neutral VideoConferencing Background materials. So you can choose both shades and a background, or with careful planning you may be able to use one product for both purposes. If your shade will be your background, be careful to plan for the edges! Light leaks could send a shaft of sunlight directly to your camera lens.
If you don’t want to block all the exterior light, light-filtering shades can reduce or eliminate uncomfortable glare, while still allowing ambient sunlighting and view-through to the outside.
The construction of window shades has become friendlier to the environment as well by including PVC-free fabrics and lean manufacturing processes. Draper is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the nation’s foremost coalition of leaders from every sector of the building industry working to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work.
