Not everyone likes one of the most prominent features of a fixed frame projection screen: the black borders.

The size of these borders can vary from 2”-6”, depending on the size and model of screen. But a growing number of customers are looking for solutions without them. There are several reasons for this:

Blend in or stand out.
Sometimes you want your screen to blend in to the background. Other times, you want it to stand out. A borderless screen can help accomplish both.

Black borders literally frame the projection surface, so there’s always a hard disconnect between the background and the screen that can feel jarring to some—especially when there’s no content on the screen. Losing the borders can create a smoother visual transition.

A borderless screen can also make an image “pop” from its surroundings by creating a “floating” image, seemingly out of nowhere. You can reinforce this visual leap by adding LED lighting behind the invisible, edgeless frame.

Get it together.
Edgeless screens can be joined together for unique applications. One example is a computer aided virtual environment (CAVE) created by Scalable. They create automatic image software for aligning and blending multiple projectors into one large display. This type of solution is an essential part of successful multi-projector virtual reality presentations. To promote this use of virtual reality, Scalable has built a pair of CAVE environments. The CAVE spaces allow clients to experience Scalable’s products by immersing them in a 3-D virtual reality experience that could never be achieved with a single flat projection surface.

Draper provided Edgeless Clarion screens to serve as the walls. Our precise manufacturing ensured the frame edges join seamlessly together, allowing Scalable to blend content onto all three walls at once.

Curved screens.
A curved projection screen offers several key advantages over a flat projection screen. It can help offset pincushion distortion from a horizontal expansion lens and wraps the image around your periphery more than a flat screen for greater engagement. In addition, the curved image is also subject to less ambient reflected light from your room, while your projector’s light is more accurately reflected by the perfectly smooth viewing surface for an ideal picture.

One down side is the so-called “belly” effect. That’s where the viewing surface pulls away from the curve in the center of the screen. The flatter surface area is closer to the projector and causes pixel alignment issues, especially in blended applications. A borderless screen generally looks better in curved applications because the viewing material can be pulled tighter to help minimize this effect.

Solutions for going borderless.
Whatever your reason for preferring a borderless fixed frame screen, Draper has two solutions from which to choose.

Profile+
The Profile+ has a borderless option that incorporates a screen attachment system supported by extruded aluminum baffles on all four sides to provide an optically seamless framing system. The back of the frame is less than 1¾” away from the wall, and its beveled back further enhances the appearance of floating in front of the wall.

The Profile+ uses our patented fabric retention system, which ensures proper tensioning of the screen material and an incredibly flat viewing surface without snaps. Available up to 30’wide with a variety of viewing surfaces, including ISF-certified, 8K-ready TecVision surfaces. The Profile+ cannot be curved.

Edgeless Clarion
No visible frame or borders makes the fixed frame Edgeless Clarion perfect for areas that require an unobtrusive projection screen with a flat panel appeal. The viewing surface wraps completely around the perimeter frame and attaches to the back side. The Edgeless Clarion also provides a perfectly flat viewing surface with uniform tension for excellent image quality that is ideal for churches, bowling alleys, universities, retail, or commercial applications. This model is also available with a variety of viewing surfaces, including ISF-certified, 8K-ready TecVision surfaces, and can be curved.
