One of the first things visitors notice about the Arlen Specter United States Squash Center is the pair of vast windows on each end of the facility.

The facility, which opened in the summer of 2021, is home to the headquarters of the United States Squash Association and 20 squash courts. It is located in the former State Armory in Philadelphia, which is on the historic register.

While the huge windows are a striking feature of the building, they are also a big problem: if direct sunlight hits the squash courts, play has to stop.

The team of architects, developers, and US Squash officials looked into several ways to mitigate the large amounts of sunlight hitting the courts.
